Megan A. Kniskern MS, RD, LD/N, CEDRD-S (She/Her)
It is no secret that I love food! For as long as I can remember, food was always a positive experience that involved family, friends and pleasure. I was never a picky eater, but I was also not adventurous with food. Part of the reason for this was having an early awareness of my body, including body size & shape, and what that seemed to say to others about me. I went on my first diet around the age of 14 and would spend almost 2 decades of my life constantly thinking, “you need to lose weight, you need to be smaller”. This need to be smaller consumed periods of my life with restrictive diets and weight fluctuations; but I feel like I escaped “diet culture” messaging fairly unscathed.
My path to dietetics was not traditional, funny enough I didn’t know that nutrition/dietetics was an option until after I had completed my bachelor’s degree! My career has been a gift and a calling, having spent more than a decade working at all levels of eating disorder recovery and observing the toll that “diet culture”, trauma and un-supported mental health struggles does to lives. These experiences, my own journey and a passion for evidenced-based learning has informed my approach to nutrition therapy which is rooted in:
- Medical Nutrition Therapy
- Weight inclusive care
- Non-diet, non-restrictive eating
- Health at Every Size©
- Intuitive Eating
